The
first project to come out of our North Carolina-based
startup KWerky Productions, Forcery is a film
that was almost four years in the making prior to its
release in early June 2005. The brainchild of KWerky
co-founder Christopher Knight, Forcery is a
parody of Rob Reiner's film adaptation of Stephen King's
Misery.
The 1990 thriller, based on King's own experiences with
obsessed fans, is widely considered to be one of the
stand-out thrillers of the Nineties. Co-star Kathy Bates
won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes,
the unbalanced fan of a series of romance novels written
by Paul Sheldon (played by James Caan).
Forcery's
concept is simple: re-create the formula that made Misery
so effective as a psychological suspense. But instead
of a best-selling author of books and his "number-one
fan", Forcery is about George Lucas, who
through practically the same set of circumstances finds
himself the hapless, helpless guest of Frannie Filks:
a woman with a shady past and an unhealthy adoration
for the Star Wars movies.
The
very idea suggested to us some IMMENSE opportunities
for transforming what were originally Misery's
very tense situations into moments of hilarious comedy...
and maybe a little bit of wry commentary. It wasn't
necessary for us to come up with much from scratch for
Forcery: just putting Lucas and an obsessed
Star Wars fan in the same situations practically wrote
the scenes on its own. One of the best (and one of our
favorite) moments illustrating this is Frannie's monologue
about the Han and Greedo scene in Star Wars Episode
IV: A New Hope. The (in)famous alteration that
Lucas made for the Special Edition provided great material
for not only how to use Annie's rant about Saturday-afternoon
serials from Misery, but also for some reflection
on one of the most hotly debated subjects in Star Wars
history: should - or shouldn't - Han have shot Greedo
first? Forcery doesn't seek to address that
one way or another, but we did come up with
what we think may be the most logical explanation for
why Greedo shoots first from '97 on out.
That's
one example of something that everyone will know what
we're talking about when they watch Forcery.
It's easily viewable by anyone (and don't worry about
violence: it's VERY family friendly... except for the
part where Chris' character is killed and for some reason
his own family thought was the funniest part of the
movie) but there are also roughly a hundred in-jokes
and sight gags scattered throughout the movie that fans
of both George Lucas and Stephen King will appreciate.
Hint: don't blink during the car crash. And so far as
we know Stephen Sansweet really is looking
for a Return of the Jedi Huffy bicycle... or at least
was looking for it. The only thing we really
"made up" was the part about the Yoohoo, but
if you've seen Misery you'll know already why
that was put in here.
We
hope you'll enjoy watching Forcery, our very
first movie. We had a wonderful time making it: we learned
a lot from this first time producing a film, and some
really good friendships were made while this was in
production. And now we have to get to work on our NEXT
project but in the meantime: Enjoy Forcery!
